Preparation with the Aeropress - for the perfect cup of coffee

Aeropress-Zubereitung die perfekte Tasse kaffee

The AeroPress has become indispensable among coffee connoisseurs – especially since AeroPress championships are now held in over 61 countries worldwide. This success story began in 2005 when Alan Adler, a professor at Stanford University, was looking for a quick method to brew a single cup of coffee.
In this blog post, we explain how this preparation method originated, how it became so popular, and of course, how you can prepare the perfect cup of coffee at home using the Aeropress.

Origin of the Aeropress preparation

Some of you may already know Alan Adler: He's the inventor of the Aerobie, the Frisbee that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest Frisbee throw. To perfect this invention, Alan loved to drink coffee. So much so, in fact, that he started thinking about how he could brew a single cup, as he was very annoyed by all the coffee machines that brewed multiple cups. He complained about the declining quality the longer it took him to drink the coffee himself. A solution was needed.

Alan initially experimented with the Melitta funnel. However, he quickly realized that the long extraction time in the filter resulted in more bitter substances in the coffee. He wanted to avoid this process and developed a method that used air pressure to force a coffee-water mixture in a flask through a filter sheet in a very short time – the Aeropress prototype was born.

Alan himself said of his invention, "I have never tasted a drink so intense in flavor yet not bitter," and simultaneously predicted enormous success for the AeroPress. He was right, because from December 1st to 3rd, 2022, the 14th AeroPress Championships took place in Vancouver over three days. More than 3,500 baristas from over 50 countries participated. A true success story.

Aeropress preparation - the perfect cup of coffee

What do you need to pay attention to when preparing food with the Aeropress?

The taste of a cup of coffee from the Aeropress is characterized by little to no bitterness and minimal acidity. To achieve this full body, the coffee, grind size, amount of coffee, and brewing time must be carefully considered.

The right coffee for the Aeropress

There is no single "best" Aeropress coffee variety. You decide entirely according to your taste which beans you prefer and what flavor you are looking for.

If you prefer fruitier, lighter flavors, you should choose one of our lighter roasts. You can find an all-rounder for the Aeropress in our Omni-Roast range.

The perfect grind for the Aeropress

Of course, different professionals have different approaches. As a rule of thumb, the coffee should have the consistency of table salt – definitely finer than, for example, for a French press. However, if it's too fine, it will taste too bitter.

Feel free to experiment a little yourself and find the grind size that gives you the perfect taste for your coffee cup.

The correct amount of coffee for the Aeropress

Opinions often differ on this, and everyone has their own formula for the perfect cup of Aeropress coffee. Feel free to experiment a little to find the right amount for you, starting with about 220 ml and 11-16 g of coffee. There's no one-size-fits-all recipe, so the best advice is to simply try it! The influence of brewing time in Aeropress preparation

When preparing coffee with the Aeropress, the piston is quickly pressed downwards to prevent a long brewing and steeping time, as an excessively long extraction time leads to bitter substances in the coffee, which we definitely want to avoid here.

Aeropress preparation methods

There isn't just one method, but two methods for preparing the perfect cup of coffee at home. We'll introduce both of them to you now:

The classic method of Aeropress preparation

  1. Grind between 11g and 16g of your favorite coffee, depending on how strong you like your coffee.

  2. Place a paper filter in the filter holder and rinse it with hot water beforehand. This will remove the slight paper taste that can spoil your coffee experience.

  3. Screw the filter holder onto the brew cylinder.

  4. Place the brewing cylinder on a stable cup and now fill it with the ground coffee powder.

  5. Fill the brewing cylinder with hot water up to approximately the mark (we recommend 90 degrees).

  6. Stir the coffee-water mixture for about 10 seconds.

  7. Place the plunger onto the brewing cylinder and let the mixture steep for 40-60 seconds.

  8. Quickly push the piston downwards.

  9. Enjoy!

The inverted method of Aeropress preparation

  1. Grind your preferred amount of coffee beforehand.

  2. Push the piston into the brewing cylinder up to approximately mark 4 and securely turn it upside down.

  3. Rinse the paper filter with hot water to remove any papery taste, then place it in the filter holder.

  4. Fill the brewing cylinder with coffee powder.

  5. Now fill the brewing cylinder up to mark 1 (it's upside down) with hot water (90 degrees).

  6. Stir the coffee with the water for about 10 seconds.

  7. Let the coffee steep for 40-60 seconds.

  8. Screw the filter holder onto the brew cylinder.

  9. Quickly turn the Aeropress upside down and place it on a cup.

  10. Now press the plunger down evenly to extract the coffee.

  11. Enjoy!

As you can see, the AeroPress is a really simple way to quickly brew delicious coffee. Its compact design makes it ideal not only for home use, but also a reliable and space-saving companion on the go, whether on vacation or a hiking adventure.
