SIMON & BEARNS - SPECIALTY FILTER COFFEE

Our specialty filter coffees – you can expect select microlots with truly unique flavors and incredible variety. We constantly offer you new filter coffees and specialty coffees from around the world – all fairly and sustainably traded, of course! We vary not only the coffee-growing countries but also the processing methods used for the green coffee beans. We want to present you with specialty coffees and truly exceptional filter coffees that you won't find just anywhere!

Our very special filter coffees

Our filter coffees are roasted lighter to unlock their full flavor potential. Our specialty coffees are perfect for brewing with a pour-over, drip coffee maker, French press, or AeroPress. The slow, controlled brewing process, without the pressure of an espresso machine, allows the aromas and flavors to develop gradually and intensely. This lets you clearly experience fruity notes and rediscover the world of coffee. We'd be happy to advise you on your first specialty filter coffee!

What are specialty coffees?

Our specialty coffees aren't just a fancy name for our delicious coffees. Specialty coffee refers to a whole range of quality standards set and strictly monitored by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Only when green coffee beans meet the SCA's standards throughout their entire supply chain—from cultivation and harvesting to transport, roasting, preparation, and enjoyment—can they be called specialty coffee. The Specialty Coffee Association's stated goal is to guarantee quality from start to finish and to make the process as transparent as possible. We at S&B love this philosophy and have incorporated it into our daily business. So that you can appreciate the advantages of specialty coffee as much as we do.

Who reviews the coffee?

For coffee to be called Specialty Coffee, it is evaluated by certified Q-Graders. These Q-Graders are to the coffee world what sommeliers are to wine. To be allowed to work, they must complete a training course with final certification, which they must then renew every three years. Only then are they permitted to objectively evaluate green coffees in professional cuppings according to the SCA standards. On a scale of 1 to 100, a Specialty Coffee must achieve at least 80 points. The continuous evaluation of coffee is crucial for the quality and, consequently, the taste of our coffees. To maintain this standard, we also regularly cup our coffees, ensuring that you only enjoy the very best.

Is specialty coffee always organic or fair trade?

Not necessarily. Of course, there are plenty of specialty coffees that boast one or both certifications. However, these certifications always represent significant investments that not all coffee farmers can afford or are willing to make. Some finance their transparent, sustainable, and socially responsible practices through direct trade. This allows them to invest their earnings directly into fair and sustainable growing conditions, fair wages for coffee pickers and sorters, and education in their regions of origin. Certifications are also sometimes controversial, as they don't always establish clear standards and can therefore be misleading for consumers. At SIMON & BEARNS, we therefore make a point of knowing our coffee farmers. We often meet them at events in Germany, and these connections often lead to wonderful business relationships. Social media and other communication tools also give us the opportunity to monitor growing and harvesting conditions, thus guaranteeing the highest possible quality for you! If you have any questions about the growing conditions in the countries of origin of our green coffees, please don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll be happy to answer them!
